July 2017 Kaiseki Tasting

This weekend is our Japanese Grandpa inspired traditional Kaiseki tasting. If you haven't had the chance to sign up, we still have availability for both Sunday, July 30th and the Monday, July 31st tastings.

The cost is $75 per person. We require a credit card number to hold your reservation. A 48 hour in advance cancellation policy will be observed and we will charge a 50% fee for no shows or late cancellations.

March Five Course Tasting

Come join us for a wonderful evening of delicious food, where you'll be presented with five dishes prepared and cooked by our very own executive chef, Thomas Falchini. Availability is limited and reservations are required. This is a B.Y.O.B event, please feel free to bring your favorite wine and beer. New Year's Bento Box!

Happy Holidays from Japanese Grandma's Cafe!

We are excited to offer a traditional Japanese New Year's Bento Box containing 15 different dishes which each hold a special meaning.

Boxes are $30 each and are portioned for a 1 person meal or 2 person appetizer. Boxes must be pre-ordered by December 29th. Pick up is available on the 30th and 31st by 2pm. Please call or text at 808-634-0101 or e-mail at info@blu-umi.com.

The box includes:

KUROMAME
Sweet black soybeans, which are eaten for good health and long life in the New Year.
KURIKINTON
Golden chestnut mash, which symbolizes economic fortune and wealth.
NISHIME
Simmered Japanese vegetables, which symbolize wishes for the coming year.
DATEMAKI
Sweet rolled omelet, which symbolize education and culture.
TAZUKURI
Seasoned sardines, which symbolize a bountiful harvest.
KABU SUNOMONO WITH IKURA
Pickled turnips with salmon roe, which represent fertility.
HOSHOMAKI WITH SHRIMP, EGG, AND DAIKON
Shrimp, egg, and raddish rolled to look like traditional Japanese washi paper.
NAMASU
Pickled vegetables in white and orange which are colors that represent a good omen.
KANISHINJO
Steamed crab cake, which is commonly eaten during celebrations.
EBI
Boiled shrimp, which symbolizes longevity.
TORI GOBO
Burdock root wrapped in chicken and simmered to represent an abundant harvest.
NISHIKI TAMAGO
Sweet egg cake in yellow and white.
BURI TERIYAKI
Teriyaki yellowtail, which is a classic Japanese dish.
KAMABOKO
Fish cake in the shape of a paddle used in hagoita, a traditional Japanese game.
KAZUNOKO
Herring roe, which symbolizes a wish to be gifted with many children.

Kauai Chocolate and Coffee Festival: Wine & Chocolate Pairing and Executive Chef Thomas Falchini's Five Course Tasting Menu

CURATED WINE AND CHOCOLATE PAIRING (OCT. 22nd)

During the Kauai Chocolate and Coffee Festival on October 22nd we will have a Chocolate and Wine Pairing Event in our tranquil backyard. We will have two starting times at 1PM and 3PM and the cost is $25 per person. Reservations are required for this event and seating is limited! Chef Thomas Falchini has returned to Japanese Grandma's and has crafted a delectable five course tasting menu using fresh ingredients from local farms. He uses his expertise from working at Wolfgang Puck and Three-Michelin Star Restaurant Joel Robuchon to put together this memorable dinner. The event will be held the nights of October 22nd and 23rd. The First in Our Series of Guest Chefs: Tom Falchini

     Japanese Grandma's Cafe would like to introduce the first in our series of monthly guest chefs. Please join us in welcoming Chef Thomas Falchini on July 24th and 25th! Chef Tom Falchini of Riviera Country Club brings his culinary prowess to an exclusive 2-night dinner event at Japanese Grandma’s Café in Hanapepe, Hawaii. This young chef comes from Los Angeles, CA, and brings experience ranging from a small bakery in central California to Michelin Three-Star restaurant Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas, NV.

 

On Sunday the 24th and Monday the 25th, will have two seatings per night. The first seating will start at 5:30 pm, and the second at 7:30 pm. We will charge a $15 corkage fee for BYOB wine bottles.

      Starting in the industry at the age of 15, Chef Tom has taken every opportunity that has presented itself along the way, which has led to an excitingly varied and meteoric career. With a degree from the International Culinary School at Art Institute of California, he quickly found a spot at some of Los Angeles’s most popular eateries –including Craft Los Angeles under Chef Tom Colicchio and as well as Michelin Two-Star Spago Beverly Hills under Chef Wolfgang Puck. Combining this fine dining cooking with the more humble knowledge he gained from teenage summers at a hometown Italian deli, Falchini earned a spot in the kitchen at the celebrated Joël Robuchon in Las Vegas, NV. Once again seeing an opportunity to grow and following his constant desire for new challenges, he then accepted his current position of Chef de Cuisine at the prestigious Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, CA. As the primary host of the PGA Tour’s annual Northern Trust Open, Riviera Country Club offers fine dining to a host of members and guests with Falchini in the kitchen. This year, Chef Tom traveled on a culinary educational trip to Tokyo, Japan, to study under Riviera’s Japanese chefs, learning firsthand what makes a Japanese culinary experience unlike any other.
